    Smart City World Congress

A Look at a Sustainable Future

    ultimos avances cientificos y tecnologicos
This week, Sots Verds had the opportunity to attend the Smart City World Congress 2024, held in Barcelona, one of the most important events in the world for urban innovation. The congress brought together professionals from over 130 countries to explore and present technological solutions aimed at creating more sustainable, efficient cities that are better adapted to the challenges of climate change. With over 1,100 exhibitors and a broad representation of governments, companies, and research institutions, the event provided an ideal platform to discover the latest trends in smart city design. In this context, Sots Verds was able to access numerous projects related to sustainability and technology, highlighting those focused on energy and the environment. One of the key areas that attracted significant attention was Energy & Environment, where innovative solutions were presented for energy transition, efficient resource management, and improving urban quality of life. Several projects stood out for their contribution to decarbonizing cities, implementing large-scale renewable energy, and optimizing water consumption. A major highlight was the creation of local energy communities, where citizens can become producers and consumers of renewable energy, supporting the transition to a circular economy. Additionally, initiatives for improving air quality, designing nature-based solutions for stormwater management, and using big data to monitor energy consumption in real-time were showcased, all aimed at enhancing efficiency and reducing the ecological footprint of urban areas. SCEWC 5-7 NOV 2024   Amid this global discussion on sustainability, the Ametlla del Vallès City Council had the opportunity to present its local project, “La Campa de Verds.” This project, based on a Urban Pruning Waste Valorization Station, enables the efficient management of green waste generated by the municipality. Thanks to this facility, pruning waste is not only managed more sustainably, but also transformed into useful resources for the town, such as fertilizer for agriculture or biomass energy. The project also integrates the Sentilo platform, a tool from the Barcelona Provincial Council that enables the collection and real-time analysis of data to improve the management of municipal infrastructure. In their presentation, Pol Oliveres and Raül Ramos emphasized the importance of data transmission in improving decision-making and transparency in public management, as this information helps respond to emergencies and optimizes natural resource management processes. Energy Cities In more detail, they showed the encodings used by EVUP technology to transmit real-time data, and these tables provide a small preview of how the elements are encoded.   The congress clearly highlighted the need to promote projects that combine technology and sustainability to create cities that are more efficient, greener, and more resilient in the face of global challenges like climate change and mass urbanization. The solutions presented at the Smart City World Congress demonstrate that the future of cities cannot be envisioned without integrating innovations that improve energy efficiency, waste management, and the quality of life for citizens. Through projects like the one from Ametlla del Vallès, it is shown that it is possible to implement intelligent, local solutions that have a positive impact on the environment and society. Moreover, collaboration between local governments, tech companies, and citizens is essential for moving toward a smart and sustainable future for generations to come.
